Astrocyte/Blood Vessel Relationships

Another image sent to us by Dr. Nicolás Cuenca of the University of Alicante, created by Laura Fernández-Sánchez and Nicolás Cuenca, is the winning picture of the 2010 European Vision Research image competition.

What you are seeing is a wholemount retina demonstrating the intimate relationship between astrocytes, one of the glial cells of the retina and blood vessels.  Astrocytes (in red) have been labeled with antibodies against GFAP, an intermediate filament protein.  Blood vessels (in green) have been labeled with Griffonia simplicifolia isolectin B4 and the ganglion cell nuclei (in blue) have been stained with TO-PRO 3 iodine.
